Privacy Policy

This policy explains what we collect when you read our articles, write to our support desk or subscribe to the newsletter. We are a publication, not a booking platform, so we deliberately collect very little.

Who we are

EuroHostelTraveler LLC publishes independent editorial content about hostels and air travel from 60 E Broadway, Bloomington, MN 55425, United States. We are the data controller for this website. We are not an airline, a travel agency, a tour operator or a hostel operator, and we never process flight or accommodation bookings on your behalf.

You can reach us about any privacy question at hello@eurohosteltraveler.com or on +1 952-219-0286.

Information we collect

We keep the data set as small as we practically can. There is no account system on this site, so there is no password, no travel history and no stored payment information.

  • Newsletter subscriptions: the email address you type into the subscribe form, plus the date of subscription.
  • Support and contact messages: your name, email address, and whatever you choose to write in the message.
  • Technical logs: IP address, browser type, referring page and timestamps, generated automatically by our hosting provider.
  • Aggregate analytics: which articles are read, on which device type, without attempting to identify individual readers.

How we use it

We do not sell personal data. We do not share your email address with hostels, airlines or advertisers, and we do not build advertising profiles about you.

  • To answer the question you sent us, and only that question.
  • To send the twice monthly newsletter you asked for, until you unsubscribe.
  • To keep the site secure, diagnose faults and prevent abuse of our forms.
  • To decide which articles need updating, based on aggregate reading patterns.

Legal bases

Where the GDPR applies, we rely on consent for the newsletter, on legitimate interest for security logging and aggregate analytics, and on legitimate interest or contract performance for answering your support message. You may withdraw newsletter consent at any time.

Processors and third parties

We use a small number of service providers to run the site: a hosting and content delivery provider, an email delivery service for the newsletter, and a privacy conscious analytics tool. Each acts on our instructions under a data processing agreement, and each may process data outside your own country. Where transfers leave the European Economic Area we rely on standard contractual clauses.

Article photography is served from Wikimedia Commons, so your browser makes requests to that service when you load an image heavy page.

How long we keep data

  • Newsletter addresses: until you unsubscribe, then removed within 30 days.
  • Support correspondence: up to 24 months, so we can follow up on corrections.
  • Server logs: normally 30 to 90 days depending on the provider's rotation.

Your rights

Depending on where you live, you may ask us for a copy of your data, ask us to correct or delete it, object to processing, or ask us to restrict it. California residents may also ask what categories of personal information we collect and request deletion. Write to hello@eurohosteltraveler.com and we will respond within 30 days. There is no charge for a reasonable request.

Children

This site is written for adult travelers. We do not knowingly collect personal data from anyone under 16. If you believe a child has sent us data, contact us and we will delete it.

Changes to this policy

When this policy changes we update the date at the top of the page. Material changes to how we use newsletter data will also be announced in the newsletter itself.
