Sustainability

We write about air travel, so we are not going to pretend our subject matter is environmentally neutral. What we can do is favour the more realistic, lower-impact choice where one genuinely exists.

Choices We Favour in Coverage

  • Rail travel where it is a realistic alternative to a short flight.
  • Public transport, walking, and cycling for getting around within a destination.
  • Longer stays in fewer places instead of a rushed, high-turnover itinerary.
  • Locally owned accommodation and businesses over large chains where the difference is meaningful.
  • Reducing unnecessary consumption - packing light, avoiding single-use items, not over-ordering.

Responsible Behaviour in Hostels

Shared accommodation is already a lower-impact way to travel simply because kitchens, bathrooms, and common rooms are used by many people rather than duplicated per guest. That advantage only holds if guests use those spaces considerately - not wasting water or electricity, not throwing away food that could be shared, and respecting house rules around recycling and waste where they exist.

Respecting Protected Areas

In national parks, marine reserves, and other protected areas, we point readers toward marked trails, posted rules, and designated access points rather than shortcuts, and we avoid recommending routes or activities that put pressure on fragile environments for the sake of a better photograph.

What We Do Not Claim

We do not claim that travel, including the trips we write about, can have zero environmental impact. Flying has a footprint, and no amount of good behaviour elsewhere on a trip erases that. Our aim is to help readers make more informed choices within a trip that is, realistically, going to happen either way - not to suggest that following our advice makes travel impact-free.
