Australia, New Zealand and Fiji: The Real Distances Between the Good Bits

Queenstown, Milford Sound, Tasmania and a Fiji stopover, mapped honestly against the flights and driving distances that actually connect them.

The scale problem nobody warns you about

Sydney to Queenstown looks like a short hop on a map of the Pacific and is, in flight time, about three and a half hours, roughly the same as London to Athens. Auckland to Perth is closer to eight hours. Oceania rewards travellers who accept this early and build a route around two or three anchors rather than trying to see 'Australia and New Zealand' as a single loose loop.

Fly into Sydney Kingsford Smith (SYD), which has the best fare options from most of the world, and use it as your Australian base before jumping across to New Zealand.

Sydney and Melbourne, then south to Tasmania

Base Camp Sydney in Kings Cross runs about 35 to 45 AUD a night and is the most reliable social hostel in the city, close to the harbour without the Bondi markup. From Sydney, a domestic flight to Melbourne (around 1 hour 25 minutes, often under 100 AUD on Jetstar) sets up the second Australian leg; Space Hotel in Melbourne's CBD runs 30 to 40 AUD and puts you a short tram ride from Fitzroy.

Tasmania is the part of this route most people skip and shouldn't. Fly Melbourne to Hobart (about an hour, frequently under 80 AUD return on sale) and stay at Pinnacle Hostel or the Alabama Hotel, both around 35 AUD a night; hire a car for three days to cover Mount Wellington, Cradle Mountain and the Freycinet Peninsula, since Tasmania's bus network is thin enough that a car genuinely changes what's possible.

Crossing to New Zealand: Auckland or straight to Queenstown

  1. Fly Sydney or Melbourne to Auckland or Christchurch. Direct flights run three to three and a half hours; Christchurch is the better entry point if the South Island is your priority, since it avoids backtracking from Auckland.
  2. Base in Christchurch briefly. YHA Christchurch City runs about 32 NZD a night and is a fine one-night stop before heading south; the city has largely rebuilt since the 2011 earthquake and the new central library and Riverside Market are worth an afternoon.
  3. Drive or bus to Queenstown. InterCity buses cover the roughly five-hour route via Lake Tekapo and Lake Pukaki for about 60 to 80 NZD; renting a car costs more but lets you stop properly at Mount Cook, which the bus only glimpses.
  4. Base in Queenstown for Milford Sound. Nomads Queenstown and YHA Queenstown Lakefront both run 35 to 45 NZD a night; book a Milford Sound day cruise out of Queenstown or, better, drive to Te Anau first and do the cruise from there, cutting nearly two hours off the round trip.

The Fiji stopover, done properly rather than as an afterthought

Fiji sits almost directly on the flight path between the US and both Australia and New Zealand, which makes it one of the easiest stopovers in the world to justify rather than a detour. Fly into Nadi International (NAN); Bamboo Backpackers in Nadi town runs about 35 to 45 FJD a night and organises boat transfers out to the Yasawa or Mamanuca island groups.

Beachcomber Island and Barefoot Manta in the Mamanucas both run hostel-style dorm bunks from around 90 to 120 FJD a night, which is steep by Southeast Asian standards but includes meals and boat transfer bundling that makes the total cost more reasonable than it first looks. A three or four night stopover here, either heading into or out of the New Zealand leg, breaks up what would otherwise be a genuinely exhausting stretch of long-haul flying.

When to go and how to fly out

Run the Australia and Tasmania legs in Australian spring or autumn, roughly September to November or March to May, avoiding the harsh summer heat inland and the winter closures on some Tasmanian trails. New Zealand's South Island is best from December to March for Milford Sound and the Great Walks, which is the reverse of the Australian shoulder seasons, so this route naturally sequences well if you do Australia first and New Zealand second heading into the southern summer.

Fly home out of Auckland (AKL) or Nadi (NAN) if Fiji was your final stop, both of which have solid long-haul connections back to North America and reasonable ones back to Europe via Asian or Gulf hubs. The distances in this part of the world are real and the flights are not cheap, but the payoff, standing at the head of Milford Sound in the rain with nobody else on the boat deck, is not something the flight time diminishes at all.
