Our room was simple and tiny, we shared 2 (not really clean) old bathrooms with 2 other couples; noise from the street the whole night through. But beside of that the owner Luis is a loveable and funny guy who showed us around the best Tapas bars and tought us some useful Spanish expressions!

"Best place to stay in San Sebastian (Donostia)"

Pension Joakina is an excellent place to stay if you are visiting San Sebastian for a few days or for longer periods. Situated in the heart of the city (called Donostia in the native Basque tongue), the location is very good. Within walking distance are the old town, where restaurants and pintxo bars abound, and the bay, including two of San Sebastian's nicest beach areas.

If you are so inclined, the owner will make arrangements for a traditional Basque dinner in a "sociedad gastronomica", which is a typical Basque private club where only men can cook. Women can attend as guests, although traditionally in the past, this was not possible.

Transportation is easy with access to taxis, buses, and metros. If you are traveling by car, street parking is not recommended, but underground is preferred.

The apartment itself is situated above street level and conveniently has an elevator. The apartment owner is very gracious and knowledgeable. He offers assistance and advice for any of your needs for a pleasant stay in San Sebastian. The apartment includes all the necessities for a delightful and practical stay, including nice perks like toiletries, and hair dryer. The rooms are spotlessly clean and appointed with a modern style, including hard wood floors. The beds were quite comfortable, which is important to know if you are traveling from city to city in Spain. They have both ensuite and non-ensuite rooms. The bathrooms are renovated in modern style for a traditional residential apartment area. Another important feature that is often overlooked in reviews is that this apartment is extremely quiet with the windows closed, although it is situated above a moderately busy street. An in-room air conditioner allows you to control the temperature of the room very efficiently.

Very friendly atmosphere and excellent position right in the town center. 5 minutes walking distance from main streets and beaches.
I had share bathroom and they were clean and very spatious.
I think rooms with private bathroom are aslo available.
Only glitches: a little noisy since the town center has intense night life. Impossibile to find free parking nearby. You eiither park in a paid parking (up to 20 euros per night) or you park all the way across the bay (almost 4km away, 40 minutes by walk).

When we visited Pension Joakina, the place was newly renovated. It seems as if it is a private appartment turned into a pension, hence there is no signs or anything to find it on the street. The landlord (Luis) is very friendly and speaks good english. It is situated perfectly, 5 min. walking from both Zurriola and La Concha. There is easy parking in the numorous sub terrain complexes, but very expensive (20 Euros pr. night).

Comments  (English):
This place is clean and in a great location so why would I only stay here if desperate? Because you really are staying in someone's apartment with little privacy and a lady that will shout at you in Spanish if you do anything wrong -that you don't know is wrong as its acceptable in any other hotel/hostel. She did wander into the room as well -whether I was dressed or not! I felt like I was staying with a crazy aunt and paying a lot for the priviledge.

Anyway, San Sebastian is a must so if you can't find anywhere else this place is OK.
