Amsterdam was great, but it was not very clean. It was not safe at all! We were three girls on our own and we were woken up in the middle of the night by a strange man entering our apartment using a key. We told the owner and he had the locks changed the next day and went to bed feeling safe. To our surprise we woke up to someone trying to unlock our door using a key. We figured they wouldn't be able to enter as the locks had been changed...not so! He entered and we asked what he was doing and he just left...this is all a bit suspect and not acceptable!

We got an urgent email the day before that the place would be renovated and therefor we were sent to another place - with a private bathroom and in an ok area, so I accepted. Never do this!!! This review is therefor not about Amsterdam Apartments as a place, but the accomodation they got for us, which was plain dirty.
It was above a souvenir shop, and the owner there was very friendly. Was sent up to the top floor, a big room with one bed and a private bathroom - but the bed was broken, the sheets were the biggest mismatch in the world (ok, not important, but when you pay 65 a night, things has to be a bit better), there was no mirror in the bathroom and it wasnt clean. And I have been living in hostels in Australia the last year!
We complained, got the room under, big room - but not clean. Hairs in the bed, not vacuumcleaned or table washed, toilet not washed, there was a bath but you wouldnt touch it, bin still full, etc. We said it wasnt clean and he said it was cleaned, the bed as well (notice: the duvet cover was attached to the duvet!), but he came to clean the bin. After another night complaining also with toilet paper.
I called Amsterdam Apartments and he said it has to be clean (so suppose his standards in his place are better), and he would talk to the owner. It didnt help.

I was silly and paid everything, I should have kept some money to force them to clean. Next time! But never in this place.

The hotel was decent. I had too much luggage and had to bring it up to the 3rd floor (4th floor if you're from the US) which without an elevator was not a joy. The room was nice, although my window had a view of a wall of a building about a foot away. I also did not feel safe having to leave my key to the room behind at the front desk every time I left. The shared bathroom was clean, although the bathroom with a shower was a floor down from me. The free breakfast was nice, with the hagel slag being a Dutch food I soon grew to love. For the price, it wasn't bad. Also close to an Albert Heijn which was nice having access to a grocery store nearby.
